Dire nurse staffing shortages are commonly predicted by researchers given the impending retirement of the Baby Boomer segment of the workforce. Nurse executives need to devise and apply action-orientated solutions to counter this threat. One such solution is succession planning for perioperative nurse leaders. This paper examines a three-prong approach to succession planning tailored to the perioperative environment. The need for 1) perioperative nursing residency programs, 2) continuous professional development, and 3) inclusion of perioperative nurse leaders in nursing faculty—and how these factors intersect with perioperative nurse staffing—are the focus of this paper.
